There are six things the Lord hates— no, seven things he detests: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that kill the innocent, a heart that plots evil, feet that race to do wrong, a false witness who pours out lies, a person who sows discord in a family. (Proverbs 6:16–19 NLT)
It’s that last thing in the list that I’ve been thinking about today. I kind of get the idea that God is very much in favor of that institution we call the family. He is the one that designed it, after all. We have a saying that “blood is thicker than water”. We have all types of relationships with people around us, but the relationships that ought to last are those of family. You may not get along with your dad or your sister. You may not even talk to them or see them for Christmas, but the fact remains the same that they are still family. Friendships can dissolve, employees leave, but DNA is forever.
Because our family relationships have such an underlying permanence to them, things can get quite painful when there is tension in a family. Some of us tend to retreat when we have conflict with others. When acquaintances hurt us, it’s not hard to just avoid them, but how do you avoid family?
Sometimes you just can’t get around “discord” in a family. But God’s desire is that we shouldn’t be the ones to start it or continue it. May God help us grow healthy family relationships.
